Conceived and developed thousands years ago, Ayurveda is one of the world’s oldest healing system. It is based on the credence that health and wellness depend on a delicate balance between the mind, body, and spirit. According to the ancient Vedic thought everything in the universe is interconnected. If our body, mind and spirit are in harmony with the universe, we remain healthy. When this delicate balance is disrupted then disease occurs.
Ayurveda believes that everything in this world including the human body is made of five basic elements- Earth, Water, Fire, Air and Space. These five elements combine in the body to form three life forces or energies called three doshas. They are the Vata dosha (space and air), the Pitta dosha (fire and water) and the Kapha dosha (water and earth). Health in Ayurveda is not merely the absence of disease but is the balance of three doshas which make the body tissues and energies and complete consonance of the mind and spirit too.
Types of Ayurvedic Treatment – From the practice point of view the ayurvedic treatment can be divided into two parts. The first one is the palliative part. It is also called the Shaman Chikitsa which is administered in day to day practice. Here the medicines used after examining patient’s Prakriti and the doshic involvement of the disease helped by necessary dietary and lifestyle modifications supress or cure the disease. The other one which is more intense form is called Shodhan Chikitsa or the purification form of treatment. In this form various Panchkarma methods are applied and body is cleansed of the toxins to restore the doshic balance in order.
Safety of Ayurvedic Treatment –
प्रयोगः शमयेत् व्याधिं यो अन्यं अन्य उदीरयेत ।
न असौ विशुद्धः शुद्धस्तु शमयेत यो न कोपयेत् ।।
While describing the essential components of treatment the learned acharyas, apart from the physician , the patient and the attendant have given due importance to the proper medicine. It is said that only that medicine is the good medicine which while curing one disease doesn’t give rise to any other problem. The medicine should be having all its components in full strength and should be administered in a soothing way.
