Pancreas Cancer Treatment in Ludhiana, Punjab, Pancreatic tumors are either endocrine or exocrine tumors. It depends on the type of cell which starts in. It is important to know the tumor type because each type has different functioning, and treatment will also vary.

Pancreatic Exocrine Tumors
Pancreatic exocrine tumor occurrence is around 93% of the patients. The problem begins in the exocrine cells of the pancreas which result in the production of enzymes that result in digestion. 

Adenocarcinoma
Adenocarcinoma is the most common type of cancer in the pancreas. Patients who are diagnosed in around 9 out of 10 have this cancer type. It is referred to as an exocrine tumor. The problem starts from the pancreatic duct cell lining which plays an important role in digestion. This word can apply to cancer of other organs. In case the cancer origin is from the pancreas then you have pancreatic adenocarcinoma. 

Other Exocrine Tumors

  • Acinar cell carcinoma is one of the rare types of cancer of the pancreas. In some cases, the pancreas can make too much lipase, the enzyme which helps in digesting the fat. Through the blood, the pancreatic lipase level can be measured. 
  • Mucinous cystic neoplasm with an invasive adenocarcinoma has a rare occurrence. Mostly, women are diagnosed with this cancer type. However, it will form cancer if there is not any type of harmful component in it. 
  • An intraductal papillary-mucinous neoplasm (IPMN) is a tumor that begins from the side branch of the duct or the part of the pancreatic duct. When this type is diagnosed it is not cancer but there are chances that it can become cancer. 

Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors (PNETs)
Pancreatic Neuroendocrine Tumors is also referred to as islet cell tumors and occurs in around 7% of the patients. Its growth is slower as compared to the exocrine tumors. 
Mostly, its growth is because of the endocrine cell’s abnormal growth in the pancreas which is referred to as islet cells. The cells produce essential hormones that are required for managing the blood sugar levels. The PNETs can be of 2 different types:

  • Functional (produce hormones)
  • Nonfunctional (do not produce hormones)

With cancer type, the symptoms can be different for every individual. Also, the patient is going to respond to the treatment differently. The classification of PNETs depends on the hormones they make, and some of the common types are:

  • Gastrinoma (gastrin)
  • VIPoma (vasoactive intestinal peptide)
  • Glucagonoma (glucagon)
  • Insulinoma (insulin)
  • Somatostatinoma (somatostatin)
  • Nonfunctional Islet Cell Tumor (no hormones)

How Is the Type of Pancreatic Cancer Diagnosed?
Pancreatic cancer is diagnosed with imaging tests but for better understanding tissue samples are taken by the doctor or biopsy is done.
